After injuries limited Pau Gasol in 2006-07, the Grizzlies were expected to rebound under new head coach Marc Iavaroni. But the mix of older vets and developing talent never meshed, and rookie PG Mike Conley's season started 30 games late due to a shoulder injury. By Feb. 1, the team opted to look ahead, trading in-his-prime Pau Gasol to the Lakers for Javaris Crittenton, the rights to Marc Gasol, Kwame Brown's expiring contract and two first-round picks.
Selecting fifth overall, Memphis is likely to look for a big who can push incumbent starters Darko Milicic and Hakim Warrick. A slashing swingman would also complement Mike Miller off the bench.
"(General Manager Chris) Wallace didn't rule out the possibility of executing deals that would net a proven NBA player. He cautioned, however, that various Internet rumors involving the Grizzlies have no merit -- and indicated the franchise isn't likely to take a dramatic turn in direction."
