Sixers Trade Speedy Claxton to San Antonio for Mark Bryant, the rights to John Salmons and Randy Holcomb

PHILADELPHIA, PA - June 26, 2002 - Philadelphia 76ers General Manager Billy King announced tonight that the Sixers have traded guard Speedy Claxton to the San Antonio Spurs for forward Mark Bryant and the draft rights to guard John Salmons and forward Randy Holcomb.

The Spurs selected Salmons with the 26th overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft and Holcomb with No. 57.

Claxton, originally selected by the 76ers with the 20th overall pick of the 2000 NBA Draft, played in 67 games in 2001-02, starting 18 of them. After missing the entire 2000-01 season with a left ACL tear, Claxton averaged 7.2 points, 3.0 assists, 1.4 steals and 22.8 minutes in his what was considered his Rookie season. A 5-foot-11, 166-pound guard, Claxton led his team and ranked first among the rookie leaders in free throw percentage, converting 83.8 percent from the charity stripe, and also rated among the rookies in points (12th), assists (fourth) and steals (fourth). He recently had arthroscopic surgery on May 22, 2002 to repair a torn left labrum.

Bryant, a 6-foot-9, 250-pound forward, is a veteran of 14 NBA seasons. He has played in 781 games, averaging 5.5 points and 3.8 rebounds in 17.1 minutes per game for seven different teams. Originally taken with the 21st overall pick in the 1988 NBA Draft by the Portland TrailBlazers, Bryant played seven seasons in Portland. Last year for San Antonio, Bryant saw action in 30 games, averaging 1.9 points and 1.5 rebounds in 6.9 minutes. He had his best season in the NBA in 1996-97 for the Phoenix Suns when he averaged 9.3 points and 5.2 rebounds in 41 contests.

Salmons, a local product who attended Plymouth Whitemarsh High School, played four seasons with the University of Miami (1998-99 to 2001-02). The 6-foot-7, 210-pound guard/forward, averaged 10.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 124 contests. He was an All-Big East second team selection in his senior year when he averaged 13.1 points and 6.0 rebounds. Salmons helped lead the Hurricanes to the NCAA tournament in three of his four years. He finished his Miami career as the only player in school history to record 50 or more steals in three consecutive seasons and is the only player to surpass 1,000 points, 600 rebounds, 400 assists and 150 steals.

Holcomb is a 6-foot-9, 220-pound forward out of San Diego State, where he played two seasons. He averaged 16.4 points and 6.9 rebounds in 61 games for San Diego from 2000 to 2002. In his freshman season at Fresno State in 1998-99, he averaged 5.3 points and 3.0 rebounds in 31 games. As a senior, Holcomb led the Mountain West Conference in rebounding (9.0 per game), while finishing fourth in scoring (16.9 per game).
